Coffee production in PNG dates back one hundred years, however, it was not until the 1970’s that infrastructure developed to a scale that allowed the industry to flourish. The unique soils, sunlight and generally superb growing conditions, along with the early ambitious & capable pioneers in the Eastern and Western Highlands’ Provinces, saw the industry expand rapidly.
Today, Coffee production is the country's second-largest agricultural export (after oil palm), and employs approximately 3 million people on primarily small, mixed-production coffee gardens. However, several large plantations and many hundreds of mid-sized plantations continue to operate across the country. The industry produces about 800,000 bags of coffee annually, a stark reduction in output from the 1980’s and 1990’s when the industry produced far in excess of one million bags per annum.
NGCI aims to strengthen and smooth the path of acceptable, high quality SHP coffees to the International market place.
Combined with the amazing natural environment, the country is blessed with some of the most prominent and quality-oriented varietals in the coffee world, without having been infiltrated by the new wave of production-oriented or disease-resistant varietals. The mix of Arusha, Typica, Caturra, and Bourbon varietals produce a mix of wonderful & unique flavours and cupping experiences.
Our buyers and consumers can be assured of the most outstanding and unique, sweet, yet balanced cup profiles.
